Food is just as much a vital part of the Arabic language as it is the Arab culture. In other words, learning Arabic words for food is crucial when learning about both the language and the culture. Furthermore, Arabic cuisine is some of the best-tasting food in the world. As a result, it would be a shame to miss out on some of the most delicious meals you’ve ever eaten because you don’t know the words for what makes up some of these great dishes.
You see, Arab cuisine is regional. Thus, it stretches from the Maghreb to the Fertile Crescent and over to the Arabian Gulf. However, even though the foods Arabs enjoy may be centuries old, there are many regional differences in the cuisine. For instance, you may be eating mujadara in Syria or Lebanon, but it may be a quite different tasting from the mujadara you feasted on in Egypt last week. Additionally, dishes can differ both in the way it’s prepared and what it’s called. For example, what Moroccans call couscous, Jordanians call maftool and both dishes are made in different ways in both countries.
Speaking of Jordan, many regions have their own native dishes as well, like the Hashemite Kingdom’s mansaf, which you will rarely if ever, see served in other countries. What’s more, where you’re used to spicing sweets up with things like cinnamon, for example, Arabs are using it to spice up their meat dishes as well as their sweets.
Finally, as your learning words for food in Arabic, keep all of the above in mind and practice your new Arabic words by helping yourself to some of the region’s tasty cuisine. Lastly, we think you’ll agree that there is no other food in the world quite as delicious.
