While it’s true that English is the second language of nearly almost every country on Earth, there are a few cases where you knowing only English might not help you at all. Therefore, you need to be prepared to speak the particular language of wherever you plan to travel.

1. “You had me at ‘Hello’.”

Every good conversation starts with a friendly “hello”. At the very least, make sure that you know how to greet people in their native language when traveling overseas. Likewise, don’t forget to say “thank you” in their language after they’ve helped you.

2. Ask for directions

It happens to the best of us and if you find yourself lost in a foreign city. Asking the locals might be your only chance of getting back to your hotel before dark. Even those who speak English as a second language sometimes have the hardest time when it comes to giving direction. So, knowing basic directions like “right” “left” and “straight” in the country you’re visiting can help you on your way back home safe and sound.

3. In case of emergency…

Maybe you don’t like to think about it, but if you travel often enough, eventually something might go wrong. However, it doesn’t have to go horribly wrong if you learn some words in the native tongue like “Help!”, “Call an ambulance!”,  or “Police!”. Even though we hope you never have to use these words, you can rest a little easier just knowing that you can say them in the local language.

4. Get fed

Besides gaining your respect and admiration, do you know what else will get you being able to order at a restaurant in the native language? Good food! So, instead of just pointing at meal on the menu and hoping for the best, learn a little about the names of the cuisine of the country your living in or visiting. After all, isn’t part of traveling and experiencing other cultures being able to sample some of their delicious food?

5. Introduce yourself

In almost every foreign language class that you’ll ever take, you’re going to start with the basic “What’s your name and where do you come from?”. Do you know why that is? It’s because, no matter where you travel, this is the easiest way to launch a conversation with a local. Locals really appreciate and respect a foreigner who has gone out of their way to learn a little bit of their language. As a result, they see it as you are also returning that respect to them. What can better your travel experience more than that?
