Everybody hits a slump once in awhile. Maybe it’s a baseball player who hasn’t gotten a decent hit mid-way through the season. Maybe it’s you learning Arabic and reaching a plateau before your big trip to the Middle East. It can be a frustrating experience. Moreover, you may want to just give up. However, don’t give up just yet. Whether you’re thinking of how to get better at reading Arabic or simply how to improve in Arabic in general, today we’re going to show you how you can get out of your rut and back on the path to learning Arabic the right way.

“When you’re in a slump, you’re not in for much fun

Un-slumping yourself is not easily done.”

– Dr. Seuss

Get Your Nose Out of Your Books Once in Awhile

Okay, maybe you think that sounds a little harsh. The truth is, however, there are a couple of things you can do to improve your Arabic. First, learn what’s in your textbooks. Second, however, is to live your Arabic outside of learning time. You may have heard the old adage that goes: “If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it.” These are some wise words. So, use your Arabic and use it as much as you can. This is especially true when it comes to learning the Arabic language skills of writing and speaking.

You can start looking at bona fide resources such as Arab media that’s been created for Arabic speakers by Arabic speakers. Let’s say, for instance, you’re into cooking. As a result, you’ve chosen to watch a cooking show. At the start of the show, you’ll hear the chef address his or her viewers using common Arabic greetings. You’ll also hear the chef using words like fulful (“pepper”) in a number of ways like fulful har, fulful ahmar, or fulful aswad (“hot pepper”, “red pepper”, and “black pepper”, respectively). In other words, you’ll be using words that native speakers use in their writing and speaking. As a result, if you’re asking Google, “How to improve my Arabic vocabulary”, the answer is to simply step into the real world of Arabic.

Grab a Map

One of the best ways to learn Arabic is to fully immerse yourself in the culture. So, you might want to grab a map of the Middle East and start planning your journey. You’ll receive many benefits when you plan a trip where you’ll get to use your newfound Arabic skills. You’ll stay more focused on what you want to say not only when you arrive, but also during your time there. A trip to the Arab world will be a good way to measure how much you’ve learned and improved as well. Not to mention that, thanks to modern technology, you’ll meet a bunch of new friends that you can continue to practice speaking Arabic with when you get back home.

Always Look for New Ways to Learn Arabic

Now that you’ve moved into the real Arab world, don’t stop there. Just as you’re doing now, read other websites that can provide a plethora of resources. (After all, most of them are absolutely free!) Then start a list of resources that work for you. Whether you plan to keep the list in a paper journal, a social media account or your bookmarks folder, anything that you find interesting should go on the list.

Whenever you have a few spare minutes, start at the top and work your way down, giving everything a try. Some resources you’ll love, some you won’t. At least you’ll see your Arabic improving. And don’t forget to include resources that’ll improve your listening and speaking skills, too! You’ll then be reducing as many barriers as you can to work on these language skills at the same time that you’re learning them.

Remember when you’re stuck in an Arabic moment and you can’t seem to get out of it, you’re not alone. The advice of others will help you see what they did to overcome their slumps. Then you can try their techniques. Additionally, always remember that learning Arabic is supposed to be fun, so find ways to make it more enjoyable for you.
